The Story of Tonkin

Previously, most transportation needs were met through waterways and travel on foot. Villages, marketplaces, and specialized craft communities were connected by vernacular roads, river networks, and a slower rhythm of exchange. These networks formed an organized social and economic structure rooted in proximity and locality.

Modern industrial infrastructure arrived in abrupt contrast to this human-centered traditional society. Railway construction began in the 1890s and continued into the early 1900s. The network was designed to facilitate military deployment, resource extraction, and administrative control across French Indochina. Rather than establishing an entirely new system, the railway was laid directly upon pre-existing trade routes and established patterns of circulation.

The earliest railway sections followed the ancient Thien Ly Road, while stations such as Than-Moï (now Ban Thi, Lang Son, Vietnam) and Les Pins (now Juan-les-Pins, Alpes-Maritimes, France) were positioned at strategic intersections where markets had long been active. These stations became commercial hubs for traders, while simultaneously amplifying the micro-economies of surrounding rural villages.

The French railway system was conceived and constructed through careful adaptation to conditions that already existed across the territory, landscapes shaped by geography and generations of local inhabitants. The encounter between indigenous ways of life and industrial modernity gave rise to a compelling yet deeply integrated relationship. Existing cultural networks were not erased; rather, they were reinforced and expanded. The map is our tool for orientation, while also serving as a visual representation of two systems coexisting in a mutually interdependent relationship. The organized railway network is layered over fragmented vernacular paths and localized nodes. The brand reflects this duality, as well as the relationship between French influence and local indigenous structures.
